“The most helpful thing I have learnt from this course is to trust my design instinct, give myself time to organise my thoughts, to think about colour, texture and technique. I also learnt to love my creative process and playing with ideas until I feel I’m on the right track.”

I enrolled on the City in Guilds level 3 in Hand Embroidery after completing the level 2 with SST the year before which I had such a lovely experience doing. I have always done making of some description and this course just helped consolidate and elevate my skills in such a wonderful way.

I really wished to focus on learning, designing, stitching and putting those advanced skills into practice. I wanted to complete an accredited course because I missed out on the creative arts at school and I needed to prove to myself I could complete a course with some vigour and challenge.

I chose the School of Stitched Textiles because on line learning was the best option for me to balance with my day job. The website and student support was so engaging and helpful, the admin team and the tutor support I received was positive and pushed me to try new things.

The most helpful thing I have learnt from this course is to trust my design instinct, give myself time to organise my thoughts, to think about colour, texture and technique. I also learnt to love my creative process and playing with ideas until I feel I’m on the right track.

My next steps are to find places to sell my work which has been successful so far, I am building my Instagram profile and staying engaged with the textile world. I am enjoying experimenting with my new skills and staying out of my comfort zone. I plan to incorporate more of the natural world into my stitching and keep finding places to share ideas with others.

I would highly recommend a course with SST, you can learn so much about your chosen skill, yourself and what you can create, its amazingly liberating!

My advice to new students is, enjoy the emersion, get all that you can out of the experience and remember to give yourself enough time and push yourself, you will be amazed with what you can do with the right learning materials, tutor and peer support!
