Our accredited courses are internationally sought after because they are recognised for their excellence in both teaching and learning. Each year we offer students the chance to study a Skill Stage 2 course of their choice by applying for a Joan Harrison Creative Textiles Bursary – supplied by the School of Stitched Textiles.

Our mission at the School of Stitched Textiles is to teach and promote creativity allowing individuals to reach their full creative potential. However, we know that our courses may not always be financially accessible to everyone. The Joan Harrison bursary scheme therefore allows students to access courses and learn vital skills. Successful applicants will be awarded a bursary to study an accredited course for FREE. Course tuition will be covered by the School of Stitched Textiles.
Anyone interested in studying a Skill Stage 2 accredited courses can apply for our Joan Harrison Creative Textiles Bursary Scheme. However, our bursaries are aimed at those who may not otherwise be able to afford our courses. We will therefore ask you to provide information about your financial/employment situation – please don’t be offended. This information will not be shared. It will only be used during the shortlisting process.

Once the shortlisters have been selected we will hold a peer poll. This gives our followers and subscribers the chance to vote for their favourite pieces.

Taking and submitting images of your work is an important part of the application process. As a distance learning course you’ll be expected to do this regularly throughout your studies. You do not need any specialist equipment for this but we do ask that images are of a good quality: Not blurry, well lit, well framed and relevant. Previous bursary winners have all taken clear, well lit images of their work and we believe the image quality really helps. Below we have provided some tips on how to take a good image which is an essential part of the application process.
Don't let a busy background detract from your work. Use a plain or solid colour background where possible, that is free from lots of different colours or patterns, people and animals.
Take lots of shots of your work from different angles and submit the best ones. Make sure they are well lit by using an extra light source or by taking the image with your back to a window.
We want to see work you've completed that is relevant to the course that you're applying for. So, if you're applying to study knitting we'll want to see a completed knitting project.
We can only accept images that are saved in .jpeg .jpg and .png format. You can use a free online tool like online convert to convert images into the right format. They also need to be no larger than 3MB.
To ensure that your images are in focus make sure that you aren't moving a lot when taking the photo. This is particularly important when using a mobile device to take photos.
We'd like two images of your work. You can either submit two images of two separate projects (preferred) or two images of the same project which includes a close-up shot of your work from a different angel.

By submitting work to the School of Stitched Textiles you are providing consent for the images to be used across our social media networks and across other marketing communications, such as emails and newsletters and promotional materials. You are also consenting for your work to be entered into a vote that will be issued to the School of Stitched Textiles readers and followers across our social media channels and networks.
The information you provide about your financial situation will not be shared with anyone outside the judging team and it will be destroyed after shortlisting has taken place in accordance with GDPR.
Applicants will automatically be added to our ‘Expressions of Interest’ mailing list so that we can keep you up-to-date with information about our accredited courses.
Successful applicants will be informed by the 17th/18th October and announced to the other entrants and followers on the same day or the following day. The bursary placement is for our courses commencing early November 2023. Entrants should ensure that they are available for this start date as we cannot carry the placement over. Courses are non-refundable and cannot be issued to a third party.
You will be responsible for supplying your own tools and materials, as the bursary covers only the course fees, not other outgoings. You will also need access to a computer, printer and camera, so please ensure these things are available to you before applying.
