After many years as a textiles teacher, I had been fortunate to explore an incredible range of skills and techniques. But one passion had always stood out above the rest: machine embroidery, and particularly free-motion embroidery.
What captivates me most about free-motion embroidery is the creative freedom it offers. There are no limits to the combinations of fabrics, threads, and mixed media that can be brought together, which means every piece becomes completely unique. The process is both exciting and endlessly inspiring.
For some time, I had known that I wanted to transform this passion into a business. The possibilities, though, felt overwhelming. Finding a clear direction was challenging, especially when I wanted to create something truly personal rather than simply following a path that others had already taken.
To help define my creative identity and discover my niche, I decided to return to study. That search led me to SST. With so many inspiring courses available, choosing was no easy task! Eventually, I enrolled on Machine Embroidery Skill Stage 4. Even that decision felt like a leap of faith. Was I really ready for Skill Stage 4? I hoped so.

The recognition that came at the end of my studies meant a great deal to me. I was honoured to be nominated by my course tutor for an SST Student Excellence Award, presented as part of the 2026 Student Excellence Awards for Skill Stage 4. The awards celebrate students who have gone above and beyond, both in the quality of their work and in their commitment and dedication to the course. Receiving a Certificate of Excellence and having so many of my machine embroidery pieces exhibited as part of the awards felt like a wonderful affirmation of everything the course had given me.
Today, I am in the exciting early stages of launching my business. My website is live, I am preparing to deliver workshops, and I have already begun accepting commissions. Teaching workshops feels especially rewarding: it brings together my love of textiles and my background in education while allowing me to share my enthusiasm with others.
