Enhance your Knitting skills with our Skill Stage 3 hand knitting online course. This is a unique distance learning course giving you the chance to develop existing skills and previous knowledge of this popular and highly creative art form.

Course Highlights

Get proficient at the Knitting basics including, casting on and off, checking and controlling tension, stocking stitch, garter stitch and other knit and purl stitches.

Developed more advanced skills like increasing and decreasing stitches, bobble stitch, lace stitch, and cable stitches.

Learn more advanced techniques including knitting with round needles, knitting with four needles, stripes and colour combinations, additions; pockets, buttonholes, collars as well as learn how to join yarn.

Create your own design folio containing all of your designs, research and inspiration. This is a valuable folio which will help you to develop own personal styles and techniques.

Create two samples folio containing traditional and contemporary techniques samples.

Learn edging and finishing techniques to complete pieces to a high standard.

Create three finished final assessment pieces - choose from either a 3D functional item, a panel/hanging/quilt or a wearable art item and one inspired by your chosen designer or artist.

Gain professional practise – produce a CV and professional profile, cost items, compile a business plan and present work for promotional purposes online.


There is around 360 hours of course content/materials and it is usual for students to take between 6-8 weeks to complete each module. Students can take up to 2 years to complete, however it is up to the individual student how quickly they wish to return work to their tutor for assessment.


 A six-month contingency is available, to cover unforeseen issues such as illness, upon production of supporting documentation,  extending the course life to 30 months (2.5 years). The maximum for this extra contingency time is once during the course lifetime.

Delivery and Assessment

The course is supplied as a distance learning course where course materials and tutor assessments are delivered digitally and work is returned to your tutor via digital presentation.


Your coursework will be reviewed by your tutor and periodically by an Internal Quality Assessor, to ensure the appropriate quality standard is maintained. You will be provided with written feedback in a timely fashion (usually within 10 days) and, if needed, you will be able to re-submit altered work. You can contact your tutor at any time to request your work to date be reviewed and suggestions for future progress be made.

How Do I Enrol?

Students can enrol for this course during the enrolment period. We hold 3-4 enrolment days throughout the year for new students.
