Henry’s Buttons

Detail from one of my 60cm wide Dorset Buttons
Undercliffe Cottage, Donhead St Mary SP7 9DG

I work in fabrics and gather inspiration from the heritage craft of Dorset Buttons, once a major cottage industry in Dorset. To help keep this heritage craft alive, I use the original methods to work my Dorset Buttons using contemporary materials. I also try out new designs and ways to use the skills of this heritage craft.

Most of my work is based on a ring and I use anything from a 5mm ring for fine delicate work to 60cm and over hoops for wall art. I like to use vintage or ethically sourced yarns and textiles, and my buttons are worked in a range of fabrics, yarns, ribbons, lace and beads. I particularly enjoy the challenge of combining texture and colour to my work.

My works is often commissioned but I also exhibit locally including galleries at The National Trust property at Stourhead, The Cygnet Gallery in Shaftesbury and Sculpture by the Lakes near Dorchester. Commissioned work includes anything from costume for films, living history costumes and bespoke design work.

Demonstration and workshops are also part of my itinerary and I enjoy meeting other enthusiast and passing on my knowledge. Many of my workshops are held in my studio near Shaftesbury in Dorset where I take up to four participants. I also supply an instruction manual and a variety of kits so encourage others to make these lovely buttons.
