On completing a Pre-Diploma in Art at Salisbury Art College I decided make an about-turn and move to marketing. Following several very enjoyable years working in leisure and later moving to museums, I decided to revisit my creative art skills, taking inspiration from the Heritage Craft of Dorset Buttony.
I have always loved working with textiles. The materials I use include vintage or ethically sourced yarns and textiles. Every piece I make incorporates a Dorset Button or several Dorset Buttons. I complement the original methods to work my Dorset Buttons with the use of contemporary materials. I enjoy trying out new designs and ways of using the skills of this heritage craft. Most of my work is based on a ring and I use anything from a 5mm ring for fine delicate work, to 90cm and over hoops for wall art. My buttons are worked in a range of fabrics, yarns, ribbons, lace and beads. I particularly enjoy the challenge of combining texture with colour to my work.
Much of my work is often commissioned, however I also exhibit locally at galleries including New Wave Gallery, Swanage, The Cygnet Gallery in Shaftesbury, and the Dorset Arts Festival at Sculpture by the Lakes near Dorchester. Commissioned work includes a range of costumes for films, living history costumes and bespoke design work.
I am currently involved in presenting, teaching, and demonstrating the art of Dorset Buttony to organisations and via on-line workshops.
