💚🌳 Landscape Artists You Need to Follow 5/10

There's a reason Fiona Robertson won the People's Choice Award at North Yorkshire Open Studios not once, but twice.

Her fine art embroideries capture the rhythms, colours, and textures of that northern landscape with a quality of attention that stops people mid-gallery. Her process is layered and unhurried: hand-dyed scrim, hessian, silk, and fibres built up to establish the composition, then free motion machine stitching to build tone, then slow, meditative hand stitching to finish. Some pieces take several weeks.

Her work is held in private collections across the UK, Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia. And yet there is nothing showy about it. It is quiet, sure, and completely its own.

"I'm not looking just for a beautiful piece of texture. I'm looking for a piece of art."

Diana Springall MBE has spent a lifetime looking at embroidery, as a judge of the Hand and Lock Prize, as a teacher of teachers, and as a collector who has built the only collection of contemporary British embroidery art in the world. When she assesses a piece, she is looking for compositional intelligence: positive and negative space, busy areas and silence, the work as a complete visual thought rather than a technical exercise.

Her conversation with Gail on this week's Textile Talk is one of those episodes that quietly shifts how you think about your own practice.

It started with a granny square bag.

Cheryl McNay had spent her career in finance, squeezing her love of painting and making into whatever time was left over. Then Covid arrived, and with it, an unexpected window. She picked up a hook, started crocheting, and remembered something she had been quietly setting aside for years.

What followed was a City & Guilds Machine Embroidery qualification at SST, a working knowledge of Tyvek, Angelina fibres and soluble fabrics, and work on the walls of her home that makes her stop every time she walks past. Oh, and an ever-growing shopping list that her postman knows all too well. 🧵✨

Some learning exercises turn out to be anything but. 🌿

Elizabeth @eliartetextil set out to explore blackwork at Skill Stage 2 of her City & Guilds Hand Embroidery course with SST, and what started as a sample became something she ended up "enjoying a lot." We can see why.

Those leaf and petal shapes, each one outlined in warm golden thread and filled with a different blackwork pattern, tell the story of someone getting genuinely curious. Honeycomb, crosshatch, diamond fills, and more — this is what happens when a student stops following the exercise and starts asking "what if?"

Blackwork is one of those techniques that rewards patience and an eye for detail. Elizabeth clearly has both. 🖤✨

Diana Springall MBE has built what experts now regard as the most significant collection of contemporary British embroidery in the world, and it began, she says, with a simple professional need: she wanted something real to show her students.

This week on Textile Talk, Gail sits down with Diana at her home in Kent for one of the most remarkable conversations we have ever recorded. She talks about her childhood in India before Partition, her training as a painter at Goldsmiths, commissions of extraordinary scale, and a decades-long campaign to make the art world take embroidery seriously.

💚🌳 Landscape Artists You Need to Follow 4/10

You don't stumble across a practice like Caroline Dunn's. You build it over years, through seasons, by genuinely knowing a landscape.

Caroline lives and works on the southern edge of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. Her mixed media textile work captures that northern landscape with extraordinary specificity: patchwork fields, winter skies, crows and rooks moving across open ground. She begins with natural fabric backgrounds, painting and dyeing them before building layers of appliqué and machine and hand stitching.

Behind the work is formidable academic depth: City & Guilds embroidery, an HND in multimedia textiles, an MA in Contemporary Applied Arts, and a PhD. This is an artist who has studied making as seriously as she makes.

Did you know you can paint with a sewing machine?

Cheryl McNay didn't. And then she discovered free-motion embroidery.

For years she had assumed sewing meant seams and hems and patterns. What she found through SST's City & Guilds Machine Embroidery course was something entirely different. Her sewing machine became another paintbrush. Her first attempts, she admits, looked like her machine had consumed far too much coffee. But module by module, something shifted. 🎨🧵

💚🌳 Landscape Artists You Need to Follow 3/10

Nobody sees the British countryside like @victoriaroserichards

She sees it from above.

Victoria's aerial embroideries offer a view of the English landscape as if from an aeroplane window: vineyard rows, rivers, gardens, and fields, all mapped in French knots, 3D thread clusters, and precise geometric stitching that is immediately recognisable as hers.

She began in 2018 with threads from her grandmother's tin, and what followed became an internationally celebrated practice. On the autism spectrum, she finds deep meaning in symmetry. "I find symmetry very comforting and calming," she has said and that quality of absolute order is present in every single piece.

We've featured Victoria on SST before. We make no apology for returning to her here. Some artists just keep getting better.
